Rather than downloading various apps and software to accommodate their needs, the visually impaired are getting an Android smartphone developed specifically for them.

Telecom-product manufacturer Qualcomm and Project Ray are partnering to create one do-it-all device for visually impaired consumers. The off-the-shelf Android device will be able to read your messages, navigation and audio books aloud. It also has object recognition and will adapt to users' preferences and usage patterns. Users will navigate the touchscreen phone using vibration and sound.

Kids With Electronic Devices in the Bedroom Are More Likely to Be Obese

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 01:25 AM PDT

If your kid spends too much time staring at a TV or another electronic device at night, he's more likely to be obese and suffer from other health issues.

In what might be the first study that connects the dots between sleep, diet and physical activity among kids, Canadian researchers have found that adding just one hour of extra sleep decreases the chances of being overweight or obese by around 30%.

"If you want your kids to sleep better and live a healthier lifestyle, get the technology out of the bedroom," said Paul Veugelers, a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta in Canada, and a co-author of the paper.…

Children’s Media Usage Skyrockets During Past Year [STUDY]

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 10:30 PM PDT

Good news: Your teenage sons and daughters have doubled their productivity over the last year.

No, they're not doing twice as much homework or eating double servings of vegetables. Young teenagers are, however, sending twice as many text messages on average compared with 2011.

Ofcom's latest annual report on children's media habits shows that those ages 12-15 are averaging 193 text messages each week, more than double last year's average of 91. Of that group, girls tend to send about 35% more messages than boys.

"Children's take-up and use of different media is growing at a rapid pace, with some areas such as texting and sm…

Apple Tablets an Important Part of the Education Puzzle

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 08:58 PM PDT

When the iPad first debuted in 2010, it very quickly made it's way into schools as an educational tool. It was less expensive than a traditional laptop and turned out to be a powerful learning device.
Just this summer during Apple's third quarter earnings call, CEO Tim Cook announced Apple sold twice as many iPads as Macs for use in educational environments. Cook said the company sold 1 million iPads for educational purposes, and that interest in the iPad2 in grades K-12 was strong.

With Tuesday's introduction of the new iPad mini, coupled with the announcement of a new version of iBooks, Apple is hoping to capitalize on that interest.

Many school systems now regularly use tab…

Watch Apple’s First Ad For the iPad Mini [VIDEO]

Apple is wasting no time to create demand for the iPad Mini. Launched Tuesday, the product appears in a newly released ad, above.

Developed by agency TBWA\Media Arts Lab, the spot features no narration -- just a shot of the larger iPad playing "Heart and Soul" on a piano app. The camera then reveals the smaller iPad, playing along in a piano duet. It concludes with black text against a white background that reads: "iPad mini."

Apple also debuted a new ad for its 13-inch MacBook Pro, below; in it, narrator Peter Coyote describes the product's Retina display as being "for the pro in all of us." The 13-inch Pro is available now, while the iPad Mini goes hits stores Nov. 2.

Sometimes it's good to be like everyone else -- but when it comes to choosing a password, we should all strive to be as unique as possible.

More people choose "password" than any other word or phrase to secure their accounts, according to a recent study. In case you haven't taken the hint, that makes password the absolute worst string of characters you can chose to protect your online identity.

‘Old And1 T-Shirt’ Twitter Revives Awesomely Bad ’90s Trash Talk

Take a Peek at the iPad Mini [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 06:37 PM PDT

You won't be able to get your hands on one until Nov. 2, but if you're considering the iPad Mini, here's a quick, candid hands-on video we took at the launch event to whet your appetite.

The 7.9-inch gadget rests comfortably in one hand, and its screen resolution is exactly that of the iPad 2 -- which is to say, not quite a Retina display. But the impressive speed at which the Mini browses and launches apps may make up for that.

It's small. But is it too small? Only time will tell if its sales match those of previous iPads, but we'd love to hear what you think. Are you planning to buy one for yourself, or for a relative? Let us know in the comm…

Surface Is a Tablet Windows Users Will Love [REVIEW]

Microsoft Surface Powered Up

This is the Surface tablet with Touch Cover in place.

Click here to view this gallery.

Surface is not a tablet. It's a PC in tablet's clothing. Don't get me wrong, Microsoft's new slab device looks and, in many ways, acts like a tablet, but at its core, it's a Windows Personal Computer. This simple fact makes Surface an excellent companion device for Windows desktops and laptops, but also makes it unlikely to challenge the iPad.

I've now spent almost a full week using Surface, doing my best to leave aside not just my Apple iPad, but my ultra-portable Windows 8 laptop as well. If Surface weren't hiding a traditional Windows core behind that Windows Design skin, I doubt I would have been successful.

What Is It

NFL Star Calls Out Opponent on Twitter After Savage Hit

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 05:49 PM PDT

Late in the first half of Monday night's NFL game, Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh chased down Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler from behind and dropped him with a brutal body slam. As Cutler writhed in pain on the Soldier Field turf, Suh gesticulated madly to the crowd with a series of stunts that wouldn't have looked out of place in a pro wrestling ring.

After realizing Cutler had been hurt, Suh simmered down and they slapped hands as the shaken quarterback trudged off the field. But that wasn't enough for Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, who took to Twitter after the game to chastise Suh for his savage hit and subsequent celebration.

Marshall slammed the slam in on…

This Robot Can Walk on a Tightrope [VIDEO]

If you are a robot lover who hopes to have a mechanical friend that could save your life someday, we've got great news. On the other hand, if you are afraid of a hostile robot takeover, the news for you isn't so great.

Scientists in Japan have built a small humanoid robot that can walk on a tightrope, balancing itself by swinging its arms. Although, it's really more like sliding than walking. Anyway, the good news is that one day your friend might be able to rescue you from danger, if you happen to find yourself stuck somewhere only reachable by tightrope.

Of course, if you're one of those people who keeps a written copy of Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics just in case you nee…

The Best Places to Sell Your Third Generation iPad

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 04:48 PM PDT

Sure, your third-generation iPad is great and all, but after Tuesday's announcement of Apple's iPad mini and iPad 4, perhaps you wish you could trade-up. Or maybe you feel like you don't have a choice if you want it to retain any value. Well, you're in luck if you want to trade it in. Ebay is not the only option anymore -- there are an increasing number of sites that let you sell your "old" device and put that cash toward a new one.

A lot of these sites work the same way: Enter the information about your device, including its condition and original packaging. The site gives you an estimate of how much your gadget is worth, and if you accept, they send you a pre-paid shipping label (…

President Obama Wins Third Debate, Google Says [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 04:39 PM PDT

President Barack Obama

President Obama was the victor of the third and final presidential debate, according to a Google Consumer Survey.

Forty-five percent of survey responders thought the incumbent did a better job arguing his case focusing on foreign policy. Thirty-five percent voted in favor of Romney.

The debate, held in Boca Riton, Fl., did not excite as much social media sentiment as the previous election debates -- it was the least tweeted of all the debates. Nonetheless, voters took to Google during the debate to fact-check the candidates in real-time. Google charted the searches and found spikes most during moments when Obama and GOP candidate Mitt Romney challenged viewers to look up the…

New iMac Isn’t as Skinny as it Seems [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 04:18 PM PDT

After Tuesday's unveiling of the iPad Mini and the surprise of the 4th generation iPad, Apple's new iMac almost went unnoticed -- judging by where the crowds went at the hands-on area after the launch event.

Still, the next-generation desktop is a major upgrade. The screen was significantly less reflective than that of its predecessor, as you can see in the quick hands-on video above with the $1,800 27-inch model. (Indeed, it would be near impossible to take a candid video of the old iMac's screen.)

The new iMac is 40% lighter than the old one, something that may not seem a big deal until you start swiveling the screen around. It also boasts Ap…

Zynga to Shut Down Multiple Studios, Lay Off 5% of Employees

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:31 PM PDT

Zynga is closing multiple offices and laying off 5% of its full-time workforce, Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus said in a note sent to employees on Tuesday.

The gaming company is closing its Boston studios and is "proposing closures" of its studios in Japan and the UK, Pincus said. As reported earlier today, Zynga's Austin office is also downsizing significantly. In total, Zynga will shed about 5% of full-time staff -- roughly 170 employees in all.

As part of the reductions, the company will cease investing in 13 of its older games and is "significantly reducing" its investment in The Ville, the Sims-like multiplayer game Zynga unveiled in June.

Pincus said that cuts will also…

Build Electricity While You Dance With These Floor Tiles

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:08 PM PDT

One more reason to dance like crazy to "Gangnam Style"? The environment.

A company called Sustainable Dance Club created a series of floor tiles that converts the kinetic energy from dancers to electricity. The tiles slightly compress when stepped on, and the provided pressure powers small generators in each tile -- about 35 watts a piece. The power can be used to generate nearby electrical systems or displays on the dance floor itself.

Burned By Apple: This iPad 3 Owner Is Incensed

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 02:54 PM PDT

Mashable OP-ED: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of Mashable as a publication.

I didn't think Apple would do it. When rumors of a new iPad 4 started to spread around the Internet, I ignored them. Try as I might, I just couldn't see Apple replacing a flagship product with another model in just seven months time. Yet that's exactly what the company did when it announced the fourth generation iPad at its iPad mini event in Cupertino.

As the owner of a third-generation iPad (which I'll call the iPad 3 from now on), I'm incensed. Back in March, I eagerly waited in line to get the latest and greatest iPad (a 64GB Verizon LTE beast). I sold my iPad 2 for the new device -- even though I loved it -- because the screen and the new features were just that good. Now, I…
